Arcade Games & MAME

The Basics:

Everyone loves the old Arcade games like Galaga, Centipede, PacMan and Donkey Kong.  Now, you can play these games on your PC!  MAME is a program that runs on a PC under DOS or Windows and allows you to play your favorite arcade games.  In addition to MAME, you must also download each game ROM that you wish to play.  These are not recreations of a game but instead, the actual game is downloaded from the circuit boards that were in the original arcade game.  Therefore, each game is the exact duplicate of the original game, but just run on your PC.

You can play these games with your keyboard and mouse, but for more realistic play, you need a control panel with joysticks and buttons.  To hook up these buttons and joysticks, you need a small electronic circuit board called a Keyboard Emulator.  It takes button presses and joystick movements and sends normal PC keyboard keystrokes to the PC.  You can also purchase a desktop arcade game controller with everything ready to go.

And to make playing even more realistic, you will need a arcade cabinet to house the monitor and controls.  Some people purchase old games and remove all of the original circuit boards and rebuilds it for playing MAME.  Others build their cabinets to their exact requirements.  And then, you can also purchase pre-built cabinets ready to go.
